WAC Gallery Information for December 2007

The Watauga Arts Council Galleries in downtown Boone’s Jones House Community Center offer two special exhibits this month.

In the downstairs Mazie Jones Gallery, The Private Diary of Noyes Capehart and other recent works are on exhibit.

“The Private Diary is a body of visual works completed during the past thirty-five years (1970-2005), most of which incorporate written components of some kind. Put simply, it is a blend of visual and written content that has allowed me to fashion a meaningful dialogue with self, a way of processing a host of experiences, thoughts, and feelings that have come with my life’s journey,” the artist said.

Fifteen months in the making, the book was released in the summer of 2006. In addition to a number of the works illustrated in the book, this exhibit also includes other recent works. The book is also be available for purchase, as are note cards of illustrations from the Diary. Noyes Capehart will sign copies of the book at the gallery reception.

An art teacher at Appalachian State University from 1969 until his retirement in 1997, his works have been shown in several museums in the United States, including the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC, The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, The Brooklyn Museum, The Mint Museum in Charlotte, and The North Carolina Museum in Raleigh.

Noyes Capehart is professionally affiliated with the following galleries: The Collectors Gallery (Raleigh, North Carolina) and Carteret Contemporary Art Gallery (Morehead City, NC).

In addition to his professional involvement in art, Noyes is also deeply involved with writing and has, since the early ‘70’s, completed numerous short stories, two novels (Potato Eaters and Red Sea), and a novella (Ghenna’s Child).

In the upstairs gallery, an exhibit of the work of the students and teachers from the The Michael R. Patricelli Craft Enrichment classes is on display. This exhibit includes mosaics, pottery, sculpture, and photography.

Housed on the campus of Appalachian State University, the workshops provide university students and community members an opportunity to have a hands-on experience with many forms of creative expression through learning crafts. Participants  study and interact with a wide variety of instructional forums that allow them to begin and continue a hobby that could last a lifetime.

Both exhibits are on display until Friday, December 21 from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. The  Arts Council galleries are also open Thursdays from 7:30 to 11 p.m. during the acoustic jams at the Jones House .

The gallery reception to welcome these exhibits is Friday, December 7 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. and is held in conjunction with downtown Boone’s First Friday Art Crawl.

The galleries are sponsored in part by Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff and Grassroots Funds of the North Carolina Arts Council. The WAC’s offices and galleries are located in the Jones Jones House Community & Cultural Center, owned by the town of Boone.
