WAC Gallery Information for June 2007

The Watauga Arts Council June Gallery Exhibits in the Jones House Community and Cultural Center feature the work of two women: Marti Kardol in the downstairs’ Mazie Jones Gallery and Edwina May in the upstairs’ Open Door Gallery.

A native of the Netherlands, Marti Kardol, exhibiting in Mazie Jones Gallery, has lived in Lenoir since 1991. Her show titled “Places of Worship” shows her love for old churches. “Growing up in Europe gave me a chance to see a lot of old architecture,” she said. “ In my travels through Europe, the Middle East and the Far East, I visited many, many churches and temples.”

This series expresses the artists feelings about the different buildings she saw. In her drawings, she attempts to show her emotion for each in the abstract background.

Featured in the Open Door Gallery, Boone native Edwina May’s paintings, show her appreciation for the nature that surrounded her on the small family farm in rural Watauga County where she was raised.

“I have always loved art, and began drawing on the backs of envelopes and every scrap of paper I could find ever since I was big enough to hold a pencil,” she said. She enjoys painting the things she loves: animals, rural America, and memories of a simpler time of life.

Both exhibits will be on display Tuesday, May 29th until Friday, 29th Tuesday through Friday from noon until 5 p.m. The galleries are also open on Thursday evenings from 7:30 until 10:30 during the regular accoustic jam sessions.

A gallery reception to welcome these exhibits will be Friday, June 1st from 6:30 - 8 p.m. in conjunction with the Downtown Boone First Friday Art Crawl.

The Watauga Arts Council galleries are sponsored by Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff.
