WAC Gallery Information for April 2007

Watauga Arts Council’s gallery exhibits on exhibit from Tuesday, April 3 – Friday, April 27 include two student shows.

In the Mazie Jones Gallery, Caldwell Community College students and community members artwork included in the newest edition of “Branches”, the college’s literary magazine.

Several CCC&TI faculty members worked together to bring back the magazine after a four year absence. “We decided to revive ‘Branches’ thanks to renewed community interest and an increase in the number of students enrolling in creative writing courses at the college,” said Jessica Saxon, an English instructor on CCC&TI’s Watauga campus. Saxon, along with art instructors Jean Cauthen, Jane Harrison and Thomas Thieleman, and English instructors Nancy Risch and Tom Hearron all worked to bring the project back to life.

Award winners were named in the poetry, prose and artwork categories. Stanley Lord’s piece, “Hal,” won in the artwork category (shown at left). Earl LeClair of Sugargrove took the prose prize for his piece entitled “Black Dog and Snow.” “Life’s Little Lessons,” a piece by Carol McDade of Lenoir, won recognition in the poetry category.

The exhibit in the Open Door Gallery, coordinated by The Children’s Council features the work of children who attend Watauga County Public Schools Pre-Kindergarten classes. Highlighting the creativity of the youngest members of the community is an outward demonstration of how valued these children are. “The Children’s Council builds upon the strengths of children, families, and educators by investing resources, information, and training toward promoting the future health and success of our greatest community asset~ our children.”

A reception to welcome these exhibits will be held Friday, April 6 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in conjunction with the Downtown Boone Art Crawl.

The exhibits of the Watauga Arts Council in the Jones House Community Center are sponsored by Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff.
